Half the late arrivals at Domus Aurea stem from one misunderstanding: looking for the Colosseum entrance. The access is actually inside Colle Oppio park at Viale della Domus Aurea 1. Here's how to get there by metro, bus, and taxi — and the floor plan to understand what you'll see.

Where Domus Aurea's Entrance Is

Domus Aurea is buried under the Colle Oppio park, the green hill just northeast of the Colosseum. Visitors have one entrance:

Inside Colle Oppio park on the Via Labicana side. GPS: 41.8917 N, 12.4956 E. Group meetup is at the site gate for ticket check and hard hat distribution.

The confusing detail: Google Maps shows the monument and entrance close together, but the park gates are on only some sides. Coming from Via Labicana or Largo della Polveriera you enter the park and hit the gate in 3–4 minutes; approaching from Via delle Terme di Traiano you risk the long way around the fence.

How to Reach Domus Aurea by Transport

By Metro — the easiest way

Line B, Colosseo stop. Exit, cross toward the Colosseum via Via dei Fori Imperiali, take Via Labicana uphill, and enter the park at the gate by Viale del Monte Oppio: 7–8 minutes walk, final stretch is gentle uphill. Alternative: Vittorio Emanuele (Line A) is 12 minutes' walk via Via Merulana and the park's upper entrance.

By Bus

Lines 51, 85, 87, 117 — stop "Colosseo" on Via dei Fori Imperiali or Via Labicana, then as above.
Line 3 (streetcar) — stop "Colosseo/Parco del Celio", useful from Trastevere or San Giovanni.
Lines 16, 714 — from Termini Station down Via Merulana: stop "Merulana/Domus Aurea" and you're at the upper park gate in 4 minutes.

By Taxi or Ride-share

Ask to be dropped at Via Labicana corner Viale del Monte Oppio: it's the closest drivable point to the gate. "Colosseum" as your destination leaves you on the opposite plaza, in crowds, with 10 extra minutes' walk.

Driving: don't. The area is in a ZTL (restricted traffic zone) with active cameras and free parking around Colle Oppio barely exists. If you must drive, aim for parking garages toward Termini or the park-and-ride at Ponte Mammolo (Metro B) and finish by subway.

The floor plan below shows Nero's original palace overlaid on Rome's hills: the entrance vestibule with the Colossus toward the Forum, the artificial lake (stagnum) where the Colosseum now stands, pavilions on the Palatine, and — top right — the Oppius wing, the only part you can visit today.

What Stood Where

Stagnum (artificial lake): drained by Vespasian to build the Colosseum — which is actually named for the nearby Colossus of Nero, his giant statue.
Vestibulum: the palace's grand entry on the Velia, with a statue over 100 feet tall.
Colle Oppio Wing: roughly 150 rooms across 350 meters facing south, Octagonal Hall at center. This is today's tour route.

Orienting During the Tour

You enter at park level and gradually descend under Trajan's Baths.
The route is mostly level, no steep stairs: the slope is the hill, not steps.
Key sites in order: cryptoportico, western quarter halls, Golden Vault Hall (VR), Octagonal Hall.
You exit at the same gate: arrange taxis and pickups for Via Labicana side.
